“Effleurage” is the use of physical force, but in order not to hurt the child and cause a sensation of pain, says one of the study’s authors, associate Professor of social work Andrew Grogan-Keilor.
Most parents use violence as an educational measure, not a form of violence against children, but the researchers did not share these practices in order to better understand the nature of mental issues.
Keylor and his colleague Sean Lee analyzed data from more than 8.3 thousand people collected in the course of questioning in the American clinics. Study participants indicated how often they were beaten or beaten with a belt until 18 years, did the parents physical violence, insult and humiliation, and asked to briefly talk about the atmosphere in the family.
As it turned out, about 55 percent of the respondents reported that they were beaten in childhood. The study showed that people subjected to this, there is an increased tendency to depression, suicide attempts, drinking, and drug use.
