Doctors advise the elderly to indulge in a glass of wine

Red wine protects the brain from aging.

Resveratrol is a natural compound present, including, in the skin of red grapes prevents age-related breakdown of communication between neurons.

The researchers studied the effect of resveratrol on the brain two years of laboratory mice. This age is old for mice. Groups of animals received resveratrol in the course of the year. Scientists paid special attention to the condition of the neuromuscular synapses — connections between neurons of the spinal cord and muscle cells. At a normal neuromuscular transmission based capability for arbitrary motion, and this function is prone to fading with age. A previous study by the same group of scientists showed that from wear and tear in the aging process of the neuromuscular synapses effectively protect low-calorie diet and exercise.

A new study showed that resveratrol is able to stop the aging process of the neuromuscular synapse is not worse than diet and exercise. At the same time, the study authors warn that using a red wine yet it is impossible to achieve the same effect that was observed in experimental mice.

“In wine, resveratrol is present in too small amounts to be able to recommend drinking it for the health of the brain,” says one of the study’s authors Gregorio valdés (Gregorio Valdez). He said that the next step of his colleagues will determine the biological mechanism for resveratrol-such a positive influence on synapses. If this mechanism is understood, scientists can create a drug that is intended to protect the brain from aging.
