Dispel the most popular myths about airplanes. Photo

Experts have refuted these myths.

Flying a plane experience an unusual, almost mystical. To sit inside such a complex machine, in a huge ocean of air… Not surprisingly, around air travel there are a lot of myths.

1. To open the door of the aircraft during flight is extremely dangerous

Actually no.

An experienced pilot and blogger Patrick Smith explained that after takeoff the aircraft door are under great pressure. That is, to open this door, you will need the strength of Superman. No one person, even the world champion weight lifting, this task not under force.

So if you’re afraid that to some tipsy passenger during flight vzbrendit to open the door and the passengers begin to fly overboard, you have nothing to worry about. It is absolutely impossible.

This myth is closely related to the following:

2. If the aircraft skin formed a small gap, through it all passengers can “suck” overboard

The assurances of Patrick Smith, rapid decompression and subsequent crash can cause an explosion of a bomb or the substantial destruction of the structure. A small hole in the fuselage — a very different case.

In 2006, when the casing of the cockpit MD-80 Alaskan airlines formed a gap, Smith had to make an emergency landing. The pressure really began to fall, but since the leak is evenly distributed on the entire aircraft, nothing critical has happened and we reached the nearest airport.

3. At high altitude people get drunk faster

This myth refuted “Mythbusters”. The level of alcohol in the blood on the ground and in the plane ceteris paribus the same. However, because the air on Board oxygen is usually less people can really feel drunk, even if never touched alcohol.

4. During the flight, the faeces are released into the air

Stories about fallen from the sky right on the head excrement — pure fiction. The pilot can not open sewage tank during flight. If someone’s head fell suspicious substance, the blame will most likely need flown by the bird.

5. If you click on the sink while sitting on the toilet in the plane, you can get stuck

You can get stuck only if your body forms a perfect airtight stopper. It’s pretty difficult. “Mythbusters” Adam savage tried to do this trick, but nothing had happened. But still better standing to flush.

6. Constant circulation in the plane one and the same portion of air leads to the spread of diseases

This myth seems particularly plausible. But Patrick Smith explained that he, too, is incorrect:

The air moves in a circle until he gets to the lower compartment, where about half disappears overboard. The remaining half goes through filters, mixed with a portion of fresh air and this mix makes a new turn.

Boeing manufacturers claim that thanks to this system, and filters from 94 to 99 percent of all airborne bacteria is neutralized, and that the air renewal takes place every two or three minutes — much more often than in buildings.

The danger of catching any infection, rather, may come from surfaces such as folding tables. So it makes sense to capture in flight of disinfectant wipes.

7. A seat belt can reduce your chances of survival in the event of a disaster

Everything here is about the same as with the seat belt in the car. It is possible to imagine a situation when stuck fixing hurt quickly get out of the plane if something happens. But in General, benefit from it much more than harm.

Employee non-profit of the flight safety Foundation’s Kevin Hiatt told us about the crash landing of the Boeing 777, which occurred in San Francisco on 6 July this year:

In such situations, people may throw out of the chair, hit the hull or drop by another passenger. So it is better to spend a couple of seconds to detach than helplessly dangle in the air.

8. Pilots can control airflow to keep passengers sleepy and save on fuel.

Patrick Smith called this idea stupid. The oxygen level is determined by the air pressure.

9. Oxygen masks — it casts intended only to calm the passengers

In fact, in the case of decompression and the crew and passengers will be forced to settle for the outside where the oxygen content is quite insufficient. And while the plane will not fall low enough to at least three thousand meters without oxygen masks will not do.

10. The chances of survival in a plane crash is almost zero

During a disaster, the same Boeing 777 in San Francisco, saved 304 of 307 passengers. In addition, according to the National Council for transport security during incidents during passenger flights since 1983 по2000 year survived 95 percent of the passengers on these flights. “Incident” means all cases that have led to major damage to aircraft, death or injury of passengers.
