Oh, how wonderful discoveries we prepares enlightenment spirit… Many people know that one of the “sources of inspiration” for the classic horror movie “Texas chainsaw massacre” (The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, 1974 – dir. Tobe Hooper), was the real story of the maniac of a Hin ed (Ed Gein). But few have probably heard that another “inspiration” for this movie became a realist painter Andrew Wyeth (Andrew Wyeth, 1917-2009).
Or rather, one of his works, a painting entitled “Christina’s World” (Christina’s World), which Wyeth painted in 1948.
The Wyeth paintings are kept in the Museum of Modern Art. “Christina’s world” depicts a girl suffering from polio. Before, almost nobody noticed that this artwork was (partly) used as one of the posters of “Texas chainsaw massacre”. Wyeth painted a young woman crawling through the fields to a lonely farmhouse. The spirit, the mood of the picture very close to the Hooper film, so we can assume that the Director saw “Christina’s World” and to some extent inspired by it.
What exactly no doubt is the fact that the movie poster painting by Wyeth was copied to and from with the only addition that “in the frame” there is a murderer leatherface with his famous chainsaw.
U.S. post office recently announced that the paintings of Wyeth will be depicted on a series of postage stamps. And “Christina’s World” was among dozens of artist’s works that will be rewarded this honor. Thus, in some way, the stamps will be a piece of “Texas chainsaw massacre”…
