Tobacco smoke can cause damage to the gums by reducing levels of vitamin C, vasoconstriction and decrease in antioxidant status.

The purpose of the study was to examine the level of vitamins C and E in the liquid in the gingival sulcus in smokers and nonsmokers with clinically healthy gums. Comparison was made between the area physically exposed to smoke and contralateral area.

All of the study area did not have periodontal disease. 41 students (16 nonsmokers and 25 smokers) were enrolled in this study. Smokers were found significantly lower levels of vitamin C compared with non-smokers in all areas. Significant differences in the level of tocopherol was not.

Levels of vitamin A were moderately reduced in smokers compared to control group. Accordingly, tobacco smoke can cause damage to the gums by reducing levels of vitamin C, vasoconstriction and decrease in antioxidant status
