Somehow, strangely long, almost a month as we have not heard anything from one of the most talkative talented contemporary Hollywood Directors. Since then, as Guillermo Del Toro buried the hopes of fans on “Hellboy 3”, the Creator of “pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pacific rim” was silent. We really had hoped that Guillermo finally started working on a new movie… but no, Mr. big mouth is back!
And this time, Del Toro decided to recall about your long-standing “dream project”, a big-budget film adaptation (rated R) the story of Howard Phillips Lovecraft “At the mountains of Madness” (At The Mountains Of Madness)!
At the time it stalled due to the fact that the Studio was embarrassed by the “adult” R-rated and high budget. Although the addition of Del Toro in the project were willing to participate people like James Cameron and Tom cruise, who seems to be commercial failures do not happen at all.
Del Toro says:
One day I will show you art, I will show all that we did. We made more than 300 concept art, we made storyboards, we made the model… we had prepared a full presentation. You will cry, you will ask “why [this project was not given the “good” bosses of the studios]?!”
Guillermo is justified, explaining along the way how things work in Hollywood:
Many people think about the Directors that a Director as Julius Caesar is sitting in a lounge chair while someone is feeding him grapes, and says: “I would now like to remove the “mountains of madness”. But it’s not. The Director is the guy with a blue collar who works hard, doing their job, puts in front of the studios figures, movie stars collects, gathers together all that has to promote your project. That’s why I tried to do both small and large films. Because in small films you have problems with the budget, but complete freedom, you can do whatever you want. This gives you a clue.
Del Toro is convinced that the project “the Ranges of Madness” was, pardon the pun, crazy good:
We thought we had a very good, confident project. 150 million budget, Tom cruise and James Cameron producers, company, ILM will do the effects, that’s art, it’s a concept, because I’m sure that big budget horror is great… But there were differences in the estimates. We thought so, but otherwise. The problem was in the rating R. If “mountains of Madness” was calculated for RFP-13 – or if I said about PG-13… me too much of boy scouts, I’m supposed to lie to people, but I do not.
However, as we know, in recent years, films such as “Deadpool” and “Logan”, which had a rating of R, gathered a lot of money. And there is a sense that “It” will be a huge hit, despite the notorious age limit. In this regard, clear the expectations of the public that “the Ranges of Madness” you can still come back.
All we hope to learn this or that, but the studios themselves don’t think so. I remember the joke that someone told me about a drunk guy comes to the doctor. Those pour something alcoholic in a glass, then throw a worm, and the flesh of the worm dissolves in alcohol. And they say, “What do you understand from this?”. And the drunk replies, “if I drink, I have inside will never gets the worms”. Such is how the mentality of the studios, so it works. For them, everything that does not fall under their way of thinking, is the exception to the rule.
