In the West, ultra-short (5-10 minutes maximum) karpovye movies have become a specific area of industry in which young Directors, actors, operators hone skills, and writers – for practicing different kinds of ideas. While by themselves these videos if they are made really well, often are very popular on the Internet, actively spread the “viral” in social networks and bring the creators of not only acceptance (including through participation in numerous specialized festivals), but also real money. And, of course, we all remember that, for example, the Director of “the curse of Annabelle: the Birth of evil” Sandberg began his career with, made a few bezbyudzhetnoe, but very “Haimovich” shorts with his wife in the lead role.
Time was when domestic filmmakers try to learn from this experience.
One of the first drew attention to the segment of the creep-video producer Vladislav Severtsev, who is still ready to allocate one million rubles for the creation of suitable short films. Interestingly, the potential of this format Severtsev assessed at the stage of the advertising campaign of her movie “Bride,” when his foreign partners drew attention to the trailer. It turned out that Western studios are constantly in search of new projects and new ideas – and the search is conducted including short videos (whether it be the trailers or short movies) in the Network.
Severtsev has created the company “10/09”, held a screenplay competition with a view to shooting a full-length genre paintings, and one of the winners of this competition, the writer Eugene Koledintseva helped to realize his longtime aspiration and to remove the short film “Spoiler alert.”

The duration of the film meets all the unwritten standards of this area and is including the opening and final credits, absolutely 5 minutes and 24 seconds, that is the film itself, the story it tell, went about three minutes. Not to say that a lot, but I can’t say enough or bad.
In the beginning we are shown the empty Playground with the swings. Night, the pale light of lanterns. Swing still, but at some point one of the seats shifted slightly, as if touched by a light gust of wind. The wind, however, is not so that we can easily conclude that they were touched by some invisible mystical force.
Further action is transferred to the interior of the apartment. The author of the film admitted that, in visual terms drew inspiration from “the Babadook” Jennifer Kent. And it shows: the picture is very grey and probably a little too dark – because everything happens in the dark room, many details are hidden in shadow, and the viewer have to strain your eyes unnecessarily, just to consider, for example, the heroine’s face (Anna Vasilieva). In this case, the frame no-no and will get it chipped bathroom door, or something else, as it seems, requiring repairs. In “the Babadook” this style was quite justified, because there the heroine was a single mother in distress. In the”Spoiler” about life, about the present and the past girl we know nothing. It is clear only that she lives in a small apartment, sleeping in clothing (which is rather strange, but this kind of weirdness suffer 90% of the characters of all movies of the world) and she has a phone.
The doorbell wakes the heroine. Surprised – the time-afterwards she opens and finds an empty stairwell and on the floor – a black album cover. The album is an eerie semi-children’s drawings, which depict… herself.

The idea of the film is very good for this format. What if you come across a prediction of your own death? Implementation is not so clear, although useless it can not be called – rather it is lack of experience. As a Director of Koledintseva something borrows senior colleagues – for example, a little trembling camera, the voyeur behind the heroine from somewhere in the corner. It seems that this technique Eugene peeked from his good friend Paul Ruminov in his “Dead daughters”. However, if the film Luminova shaky camera was annoying frankly, Koledintseva it is used much more sparingly, only a couple of micro-episodes and, as a consequence, much more effective – it creates the necessary tension, the suspense, like in the old horror movies, where he loved to insert this kind of “eye monster”.
Your monster in the”Spoiler” also appears in its assigned time, but really, not too scary. Generally the final thought is more than terrible, but somewhere in here and said, apparently, the same lack of experience, resulting in the most terrible was not “epilogue” and not even the final scene, and earlier when the heroine looks at the pictures in the album and see what happens with it in that specific second.
In summary. Did “the first pancake 10/09” practice makes perfect? Yes and no. We have certainly seen the short film better and scarier. However have seen much worse. Eugene Koledintseva get something sturdy enough, but average. However, if you count his film “first signs” of the pack that will come after – it’s a good start.
