Canada finally adopted “Magnitsky Act”

None of the senators voted against the law.

The Senate of Canada finally approved the so-called “Magnitsky act”, which allows to impose sanctions on human rights violators around the world, including in Russia.

For entry into force remained to obtain the signature of the Governor-General that should occur in the coming days. In early October, the bill has already been approved by 277 members of the lower house of the Parliament of Canada and segodnishny vote completes the process of passing through the Federal legislature of Canada.

For a longer discussion of this bill, which takes place in Canada for more than a year, the authors have extended its action not only on corrupt officials in Russia, and persons involved in human rights violations, regardless of their nationality or country of residence.

Although the current version of the bill does not allocate Russia, it is noteworthy that in Moscow it has caused the greatest indignation. The Embassy of the Russian Federation even threatened Ottawa on “counteractions” in the case of adoption.

As you know, the Russian lawyer Sergei Magnitsky killed in Russia on 16 November 2009, while under arrest, after exposing the corruption of the atrocities of the country’s leadership. The U.S. in 2012 imposed sanctions against Russian officials suspected of violating human rights. Subsequently, a similar law was adopted by the European Parliament, Estonia and the UK. However, former Minister of foreign Affairs of Canada stéphane Dion have repeatedly stated that current legislation in Canada is sufficient for imposing a ban on the entry of undesirable persons, therefore, the need for new laws. Still the upper chamber of the Parliament of Canada a few months ago, took the bill, and today he received the endorsement and lower.
