Orthostatic hypotension – a significant decline from a person’s blood pressure when he stands up. Scientists from the Johns Hopkins University warn of orthostatic hypotension, especially in midlife, is associated with cognitive impairment and dementia. Apparently, it leads to permanent damage of the brain, restricting blood flow to it.
The study involved 703 people. The average age of the volunteers was 54 years. The researchers found that the participants suffering from orthostatic hypotension in middle age, the likelihood of developing dementia was 40% higher compared to persons without orthostatic hypotension.
Experts still don’t believe in the existence of a causal relationship. But, according to scientists, it is likely that the negative consequences resulting restriction of blood flow to the brain. The researchers add: identification of risk factors for cognitive impairment and dementia will allow to develop new methods of prevention and treatment.
