A politician cannot participate in elections because of a criminal record.
Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny by law forbidden to participate in presidential elections in 2018. This was stated by the head of the CEC of Russia Ella Pamfilova.
“By law, despite the fact that his term conditional, but the qualifications of his crime – a serious crime, and people who have been convicted under this article shall not be eligible to participate in the elections”, – said the head of the CEC on Tuesday, October 17.
According to her, the Bulk will be able to participate in the elections of the President of Russia after 2028.
Pamfilova noted that Navalny had a chance to take part in the elections, if he had applied to the constitutional court and taken other steps to appeal the sentence. Instead, the opposition is trying to exert pressure on the government, organizing street protests, believes the CEC head.
Pamfilova also accused Navalny in a false interpretation of the Constitution when it declares the right to participate in presidential elections.
“It’s a lie, since the constitutional court of Russia a few years ago explained that there is no contradiction between the law and the Constitution,” – said Pamfilova.
