“This is one of the most important discoveries of the early middle ages, which was made in the UK over the past decade,” says archaeologist Peter Ryder.

Scientists raised the walls of the Church made in “primitive darchitecture style.” Analysis of the stones showed that they are most likely processed a carpenter who had no idea about the features of stone construction. The Church was in the center of the monastery, from which, presumably, began the Christianization of Britain.

The monastery was located on a steep cliff and were facing the Palace of Oswald, king of Northumbria (one of the seven Anglo-Saxon kingdoms) in the middle of VII century. He contributed to the spread of Christianity in the British Isles.

Archaeologists found out that the Church originally was wooden. However, she then in a very short time rebuilt. The reasons for this, according to them, is still unknown. Perhaps the monks did this in order to avoid its destruction by the Vikings raided the Islands. Also experts it is unclear which came first, the Church or wall with a tower beside it that served as a guideline for monks.
