BQ Space X: frameless smartphone in a metal case

Frameless smartphones is a trend 2017 and now 2018, and the company BQ, known on the Russian market, has not remained aloof from it. A few days ago, she presented a model Space X with newfangled screen, 18:9, complemented by all-metal housing and very good cameras.

In fact, BQ Space X can be considered the new flagship of the model range of the company: this is reflected in its look and capabilities, and it has a number of features which no competitors for the same money (13 000 RUB Yandex.Market at the time of writing). The smartphone is available only in black body colour, and in this model it is shown the failure BQ from removable back panels – now SIM card is put in a separate tray, which, incidentally, deserves special attention.

Today we will test the smartphone BQ Space X and find out what’s so good about this bermocoll, what are its advantages and possible disadvantages.

Packaging

For BQ Space X designers not to develop a unique packaging – it was decided to use the classic box from BQ, the benefit of that over the years of brand presence in the market over its design worked well. Materials: durable high-quality cardboard, good printing and lots of useful information.

On the box with a smartphone photo of him from all angles, and at the same time and a list of its main competitive advantages. The lower part placed under the list of features and for a listing of accessories included in the package. The packaging is sturdy, leaves a pleasant impression.

Equipment

Despite the relatively high cost BQ Space X, the box of this smartphone is half empty: there is only a manual, a warranty card, a paper clip to eject SIM cards, data cable and charger at 1.5 amps. Also there is already pasted on screen protector (not shipping, namely, protective) film. The smartphone is clearly lacking headphones in the set or at least a protective cover, since the format screen 18:9 relatively new, and to find suitable universal case is not so easy, as of 16:9.

Features

The data about the hardware stuffing smartphone can be obtained from several sources: it can be his box, Yandex.Market, complete instructions and official website of the manufacturer. The most comprehensive list we found on the BQ website and it is listed below.

The smartphone is built on quite modern hardware, though the processor could be replaced with a more powerful Qualcomm 625. Space X has attracted the attention in the first place a set of cameras and screens, as well as compact forms.

Appearance

The new flagship of BQ made in the traditional form factor is touch bar, and he finally has a metal case, so now you do not need to remove the back panel to install the microSD card or change the SIM card. Visually, it looks very compact, and it is actually less of the same Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with screen 5.5 inch: width less identical height, and in the end, the smartphone seems very tiny. He will attract the attention of the female audience.

Men also will impress its black color with dark gray plastic inserts on the rear panel for terminals antennas for wireless communications. In General, the smartphone is made in a very minimalistic design: not a single element of the design not distracting from the overall concept, even vertically arranged back camera module looks much more harmoniously than with the add-on in Apple iPhone x.

Go over the elements exterior. Front first thing we see is the screen side frames which are greatly reduced. The upper and lower frame is also noticeably thinner, but still they are available, this cannot be denied. Touch buttons there, though the place under them is more than enough.

Above the screen, from left to right, are sensors of light and proximity, information led, front flash, speaker and two cameras for selfies and unlock face.

The back panel is the gaze plastic inserts under the antenna, the main camera module, a second microphone, a fingerprint scanner and the manufacturer’s logo and you log in with the headphones placed on the upper end. The primary microphone, microUSB port and a speaker placed at the bottom and don’t forget about the tray with SIM-cards: he crouched on the right side, while the volume buttons and the inclusion of made on the left side.

In General, the exterior Space BQ X makes a very pleasant impression – the smartphone looks impressive and modern both disabled and enabled screen.

Ergonomics

Smartphone BQ Space X, as mentioned above, slightly narrower than the traditional 5.5-inch models, which may cause inconvenience for people with big hands and fingers, and they also will not fit elongated and narrowed screen. In all other cases, the smartphone perfectly in the hand, and its really nice to hold. The weight is very noticeable, but he played the role of having a good battery and housing out of metal.

The surface ends and the back panel to the touch hardly rough, but it suffices that the smartphone does not slip out of hands. Operation with one hand is impossible: the ratio 18:9 does not allow to reach with your thumb to the top corner of the screen.

The location of the speaker and the charging is correct: the hand is not closed, the wire when the charging is not disturbed, but there is one “but”: the smartphone of the sample in December 2017, especially as not the most accessible, should be with USB connector-C – microUSB already obsolete.

To access the tray with the SIM card you will need a paper clip. Opening is effortless and the tray here immediately triple: two slots for the nanoSIM card and a separate slot under the microSD drive. In 99% of smartphones for the same money microSD either not supported, or aligned with one of the SIM slots.

I liked the lack of a separate touch buttons under the screen a lot of them, but now the virtual buttons will be an integral part of edge-to-edge smartphones. However, we must pay tribute: in BQ Space X, they occupy a very small part of the screen and ease of use absolutely not spoil. The side buttons are great to the touch and have a sufficient gap therebetween, so that to miss them just will not work. They are pressed sufficiently tight, with a nice tactile feedback.

Case very much attracts fingerprints, especially the metal part, although it is matte. With screen touch traces are removed in a jiffy, but to clean metal you will need to use a damp cloth.

Screen

The first chip BQ Space X is its screen, 18:9. Having an elongated shape, he allows to place the whole of its area more content at a time when surfing the Internet or browsing the news feeds on the social network. The display is based on IPS panel, and it automatically means the presence of wide viewing angles. Fading the screen almost unnatural, but to see this, don’t forget to remove the protective film that is glued at the factory.

The touch layer of the display always responds correctly to touch, even in the cold -5 degrees Celsius and even with wet hands, but touch in the usual gloves does not recognize. Simultaneously handled three touches.

Screen corners are rounded, but the information display is not affected: nothing is concealed and is not clipped. The lighting has a very good stock of brightness and can even preserve the readability of screen in bright sunlight.

Sound

BQ Space X sounds very good: he has quite a loud main speaker that can play low and medium frequencies, not forgetting the top. You can hear it very well, and the generated sound is quite rich hearing does not cut.

Speaker good: the speaker is heard that he is near, although the volume he still a little lacking when using in the car or on the street, where a lot of extraneous noise.

But the interlocutor will hear you, with virtually no interference – it is a merit of the system of two microphones, one on the bottom and the second on the rear panel. The clean sound is transmitted and is that only very strong winds can distort the sound of your voice.

Also, the smartphone is the entry under headphones, but test it we did not due to the lack of a complete headset. Regular vibration is of average power, but still felt through the pocket of your jeans or bag.

Dactyloscopy and unlock face

In BQ Space X, there are multiple ways to protect against unauthorized access: in addition to the standard PIN, password and pattern lock, there’s also a fingerprint scanner on the rear panel, unlock in the face. The latest uses front camera.

The fingerprint scanner when adding to the system a single print works correctly 6 times out of 10, that is, in 60% of cases, so it is better to add two scans of the same finger, and then the accuracy will increase to 9 times out of 10. Speed of response is insufficient: it takes about a second before the screen turns on.

But facial recognition, in contrast, works very quickly and correctly: one out of 10 times the screen is unlocked the same 10 times, though not necessarily look directly into the camera: your smartphone might not know your profile, even if you do not make the appropriate picture. Face Unlock in BQ Space X is a very useful function, and it is obvious that many will prefer it, not dactyloscopy.

The camera

If the screen unlock face is not what you are looking for in a smartphone, then you are probably interested in the camera, and BQ Space X they are excellent. The main camera though and consists of one module, but the images it makes are excellent, and this is manifested primarily when shooting in the dark and under artificial light.

Of all BQ smart phones that we have tested, the Space X by far the best camera: the photos are highly detailed and vivid, and to criticize the smartphone in this plan, except that, for the flash: it is based on one led and shines rather dimly. Also when recording video there is no stabilization, but it is not a video camera.

With the front camera all the more interesting: two modules can be used in different ways, for example, to photograph a large group of people even without the inclusion of the panoramic mode through wide angle optics. Of course, nobody canceled the background blur for portraits: it’s all there, and, moreover, implemented the algorithm very well, it works without error.

The photo quality on the front camera is not worse and sometimes even better than on the main. Again, it is flash: night selfie will be not shameful to put in the Instagram and social network. For camera smartphone gets the highest score.

Software

In terms of software a new BQ Space X is dramatically different from all previous smartphones of the brand: he’s finally got its own interface shell, which is very decorated it. Under it is the Android OS 7.1.1 from Google.

The smartphone interface is very much like MIUI from Xiaomi and Apple’s iOS at the same time: first he got really huge set of options, and the second shared common design. From Space X there is a separate menu with apps – all just labels placed on the desktop. In the settings novice user from confusing, as the paragraphs and subparagraphs unthinkable here a lot, but it allows you to almost completely customize the device. Without flaws, however, it is still not done: there are small flaws with the translation, but nothing more.

It kompensiruet large number of additional features such as gesture control, advanced lock, one-hand operation and much more. The smartphone is the most convenient to use thanks to its software.

Unfortunately, the BQ has not departed from its practice to embed in the firmware, but here it surprisingly little, and all third-party applications, in addition to Yandex and Yandex.Browser can be removed without rooting support and loss of warranty.

Memory

Smartphone BQ Space X has 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of permanent memory. Of RAM smartphone is more than enough: he can easily keep it a couple of navigators, browser, and any toy and not unload it all. After the first boot the user is 1.6 GB, and if you remove all the preinstalled garbage, you can free up another 400 MB.

32 GB of internal memory in the user maintenance is passed only 22 GB: 8 GB given to the kernel and the preinstalled software. However, it is not so bad, besides the lack of space you can always install a microSD card, and not even have to sacrifice the second SIM card slots all separate.

Performance

BQ Space X can be attributed to the middle class smartphone due to its Qualcomm processor 430. In General, the tasks of the smartphone shows a very good hand: he lacks not only the brakes, but even micrology firmware, everything works and loads very, very quickly.

The only weak point of the device is a heavy 3D game, which he pulls though, but with great effort. To comfortably play the same Tanks, graphics will still have to sacrifice. But even at very high loads the CPU stays cool, allowing you to not only avoid overheating and burn, and trolling in games.

Performance BQ Space X was measured in three benchmarks: AnTuTu gave him more 44330 points in GeekBench, and it has earned 661 2483 points in single-core and multi-core modes, respectively, and the test 3D Mark Extreme Sling Shot gave the result at 297 points.

Work offline

In various usage scenarios BQ Space X holds a charge different: the record was almost 3 days with about an hour of messaging every day, 5-hour talk in General and two hours surfing the web. If you use it in full, then discharge the smartphone is quite possible for 8 hours. Playback YouTube videos on Wi-Fi smartphone lasted 5 hours, and when starting the movie from memory, it lasted for 6 hours.

In General, with autonomy from BQ Space X is OK, and much credit for this lies in the right choice of processor – Qualcomm’s chips have always been more economical in comparison with analogues from MediaTek.

We also add that the device charges very quickly from 0 to 60% it reached in 40 minutes, and the remaining 40%, he gained another half an hour. The test used the bundled charger to 1.5 amps. The heating of the battery during charging, no.
