American biologists for the first time were able to freeze and thaw the embryo fish-zebras, which opens the way for saving endangered species and creating new ways of dealing with infertility.
This is stated in an article published in the journal ACS Nano.
“Despite the huge success of frozen stem and germ cells, scientists for more than 60 years unsuccessfully struggling with the problem of freezing of the embryos of fish and other vertebrate creatures. It hurt, and the large size of the embryos, and that their cages should be filled with special molecules”coolants”, many of which are toxic,” write John Bischof (John Bischof) at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis (USA) and his colleagues.
They are working on the creation of technologies of freezing and thawing of organs and samples of living tissues and cells, allowing people to grow and store organs for emergency transplant or the decision of any other medical or biological problems.
In March of this year, the team Bischof solved this problem. It turned out that the frozen bodies can be returned to life and free from the shackles of ice with the help of special nanoparticles heated to extremely high temperatures upon irradiation with a laser. These nanoparticles absorb light or microwave radiation and convert it to heat evenly over frozen bioobrazca and preventing the appearance of cracks and splits.
Checking technology on small tissue samples, biologists decided to go ahead and tried to use these nanoparticles, which is a microscopic bars of gold with a height of about 110 nanometers, for the “resurrection” of the embryos of fish-Zebra (Danio rerio), frozen by direct immersion in a VAT of liquid nitrogen.
As shown by these experiments, part of the embryos survived and were able to develop into normal fry fish-Zebra is able to move independently. It is confirmed that the embryos of vertebrates creatures is really possible to freeze and then return to life.
As suggested by Bischof and his colleagues, this technique can already be used for the establishment of banks of biological diversity, where will be already fertilized embryos of rare and endangered species of fish as well as birds, reptiles and amphibians. Subsequently, mankind will be able to use them to eliminate the effects of the sixth mass extinction of animals that started in the modern historical epoch.
