According to official Russian statistics, Belarus account for almost a quarter of the total import of prohibited to import products in the Russian Federation.
As reported Thinktanks.by the rating made by the Russian company “invest-foresight”. It includes suppliers of “sanctions” (that is, prohibited for importation from a number of countries) food products on the Russian market in the 1st half of 2017.
As noted by the authors of the rating, the championship of Belarus in it is understandable. Indeed, among the countries of the Customs Union, Belarus for Russia is the most important value – as a member of the Union of the two States. It accounts 23,72% of total import prohibited to import into Russia products. The largest volume of the Belarusian imports are not concentrated milk and cream (of 7.23%), followed by condensed milk and cream (almost 6%), poultry meat, dairy products, ready food made of flour. It is noteworthy that potatoes, contrary to popular belief, accounts for only 1.66 percent of total imports. Among the products supplied from Belarus to Russia, meeting fruits such as apricots, peaches, cherries, nectarines, which are in Belarus or are grown in non-industrial scale in southern regions (apricots and cherries), are either not cultivated (peaches and nectarines), and nuts, most of which (except hazelnuts) ripens in Belarus.
In second place is Ecuador, accounting for almost 13% of total imports. In this case, the answer is simple: this state is the main supplier to the Russian market of bananas; and, in addition, the very low percentage of crustaceans. In Ecuador in the 1st half of 2017 accounted for 98% of imports of bananas (also supplied by Mexico and Costa Rica, but their share is negligible). Only Ecuador has delivered 803,62 thousand tons of bananas, which for the same period occupied the first place in terms of shipments among all products prohibited for import to the territory of the Russian Federation – hence a large proportion of Ecuador’s total imports.
Third place in Egypt. The main volume of imports is accounted for potatoes, citrus and onions, that is, products that have a large daily demand on the Russian market. Potato Egypt ranks first among all countries supplying this product to the Russian market: 70% in the relevant market. The supply of onion Egypt also ranked first for the supply of citrus (though with not very big separation from Turkey). Thus, failing to take the right niche on the Russian market, Egypt is in the top five countries”Vice.”
Fourth place is China, and the fifth – Turkey, which is also due to the traditional trade and economic relations of these countries with Russia.
Of special interest is the finding in the ranking to 15th place, as noted by its authors, the Autonomous territories of Denmark, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, supplying fish and crustaceans. The fact is that, despite the presence of Denmark in the European Union, the Faroe Islands and Greenland as Autonomous territories, however the European Union does not consist, respectively, of a sanction has not spread, especially given the poor results of catching red fish in Russian territorial waters.
In General, the geography of imports of food products prohibited for importation into the territory of the Russian Federation, in the 1st half of 2017 was dominated by foreign countries. They account for 65,86% (4104,24 thousand tons) imports. The rest, respectively, for the CIS countries.
