Romania’s President Klauss Iohannis has cancelled a visit to Ukraine and meeting with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Groisman in connection with the adopted by the Verkhovna Rada law “On education”.

This was stated by the President at a press conference in new York after the UN General Assembly.

“So, after learning about this law (the law “On education” – ed.), I canceled his visit to Ukraine. Also cancelled a reception of the Chairman of the Parliament, scheduled for the end of September, thus handing over a diplomatic signal. Cancellation of a presidential visit is a very strong signal,” he said.

Iohannis said that in Ukraine adopted the law on education contradicts the mutual good intentions.

“I visited Ukraine on a visit in October this year, the visit that I had prepared in several stages with President Clinton. The latest round of talks was held in Brussels. I was very unpleasantly surprised by the turn of events in the Ukrainian Parliament that, without telling its partners, the Parliament adopted a law which, in our opinion, is contrary to our mutual good intentions. The fact that this law, if passed, would severely limit the access of minorities to education in their native language and we find it very insulting. We have in Ukraine, many Romanians,” said Iohannis.

Earlier, the Romanian Parliament adopted a Declaration in connection with the new Ukrainian law “About education”, the document, the Parliament expresses the hope that the observance of European standards in the sphere of protection of rights of national minorities in Ukraine. Romanian officials are urging a quick settlement.
