Scientists from Tokyo Institute of technology were able to simulate conditions in the Earth’s core, and they found that there may be quartz crystals that help to explain how the Earth receives energy to create a magnetic field.
The core of the Earth is a huge ball of hot iron temperature of at least 3,200 degrees Celsius under pressure of 40 to 60 GPA, from 390,000 to 590,000 atmospheres. Scientists believe that the dynamics of the core and conductive elements within it create a magnetic field of the Earth, but exactly how still remains a mystery, that is, it is unclear where exactly does the energy to maintain the magnetic field.
Using the special diamond grip scientists from Tokyo Institute of technology have created a high pressure region, where he was placed iron, silicon and oxygen. After that, the samples were heated to the temperature of the Earth’s core two lasers. Under these conditions, silicon and oxygen are reacted and crystallized in quartz.
The researchers felt that if the Earth’s core contains silicon, the energy released during crystallization of quartz, should be sufficient to maintain the magnetic field of the Earth.
