Astronomers showed the unique “symbiotic stars”

Scientists using x-ray Observatory Chandra and other telescopes have received the symbiotic stars – special form of stars, which interact with each other like a symbiosis of biological organisms.

System R Aquarii is at a distance of 710 light years from Earth and was first discovered about a thousand years ago. For a long time astronomers have observed the system as one star, but then found that actually there are two: a white dwarf and red giant.

Red dwarf star that enters the system has an interesting feature. Most of these stars are calm, but some of them pulsate with periods from 80 to 1000 days. This feature of red giants is called the “variable World”. Red giant system R Aquarii has the “variable World”, unlike a white dwarf, which does not pulsate.

A white dwarf of almost 10 thousand times brighter than a red giant star has a surface temperature of about 20 thousand Kelvin. The surface temperature of a red giant – about three thousand Kelvin.
