Japanese and French scientists have suggested that large moons of Saturn could be born and die 20-30 times in the history of the second largest planet in the Solar system. A study published in the library of electronic preprints arXiv.org.
Astronomers in the framework of the gravitational problem of N bodies have modeled the evolution of the predecessors of Rhea and dione, two of the larger moons of Saturn.
It turned out that if in orbit around Saturn has large fragments (more than a hundred meters in diameter), over several decades, they would form one large moon. In case around the gas giant rotate smaller fragments over time they have formed two or three large satellites. The authors note that during the existence of Saturn in its orbit could be formed and disappear for up to 30 generations of moons and rings.
The scientists ‘ conclusions are contrary to another study according to which Tafia and Dion remained unchanged over the last four billion years. On the other hand, there are work, according to which Tafia, dione and Rhea appeared not earlier than one hundred million years ago.
