During excavations in Mexico, archaeologists have unearthed an ancient tomb in the form of more than 650 skulls and their fragments, formed with clay into something resembling a tower. Discovery found near the Templo Mayor (the pyramid of Huitzilopochtli) – the complex of religious buildings in the state capital of Aztecs Tenochtitlan, which later became Mexico city.
“The tower of human skulls, excavated under the centre of Mexico city, has raised new questions about the culture of sacrifice in the Aztec Empire after a terrible structure was found skulls of women and children,” says the source.
Scientists believe that the object is part of a large Tzompantli – exposed wall of skulls, which struck the Spanish conquistadors during the conquest of Hernan Cortes.

The size of the “tower” – about six metres in diameter. It is located next to the wall of the Cathedral in Mexico city, built on the site of the temple of the Aztec God of sun and war.
“There is no doubt that the tower was one of Tzompantli mentioned by Spanish soldiers Andres de Tapia, who accompanied Cortez in the conquest of Mexico in 1521,” say the archaeologists.
Now found 676 skulls, their number will grow as you continue to dig.
