Antarctica in unique images of the last century. Photo

It killed many a brave.

James Francis Hurley (James Francis Hurley), known by the name of Frank Hurley (Frank Hurley), is the most famous Australian photographer and adventurer first half of the twentieth century. His career began in the 1910s during an expedition to Antarctica, where he showed himself “a warrior with a camera ready to go wherever you go and make any hardships, just to get a good shot”.

We have collected the most popular photos of Antarctica, created by Frank Hurley.

1. In October 1914, a few months after the outbreak of the First world war, Explorer sir Shakleton gathered an expedition to Antarctica, which included photographer Frank Hurley. A group of 27 people with 69 sled dogs traveled from the capital of Argentina Buenos Aires on the ship called Endurance (“Endurance”).

2. The researchers had intended to first cross on foot by that time, already opened the South pole.

3. However, their ship never reached the intended purpose, once in the trap of ice, and his team had to leave the ship and to erect tents near the Endurance. The travelers found themselves in complete isolation, in those days there were no helicopters, no ships, no other rescue equipment to come to their aid.

4. The glaciers of Antarctica, 1914.

5. In spite of everything, fanatically devoted to his work, Frank continued to take pictures.

6. It’s hard to believe, but they managed to escape only 10 months! Conquerors of the Antarctic showed amazing fortitude and physical endurance, living long months of links for communication, hunting…

7. And even playing football!

8. On the crumbling ship.

9. Despite permanently low temperatures, Frank managed to create a series of unique photographs of the surrounding landscapes and, of course, penguins.

12. The harsh circumstances of survival made up of members of the team of professional hunters on seals and fishermen.

13. Of the 27 man squad killed three. In the annals of the history of this expedition was an example of professionalism and endurance of the explorers, who managed to survive in extreme conditions.

14. Dogs are carried, protected and warmed.

15. Puppy sled dog.

16. August 30, all participants of the wintering went on Board the vessel Yelcho and was saved. Unfortunately, since the expedition took place during the First world war, it was almost unnoticed by his contemporaries of the explorers.
