American scientists were allowed to drink beer during a nuclear war

Scientists have conducted a strange experiment.

American historian Alex Wellerstein found in the archival documents about the nuclear tests in the United States report on “the impact of nuclear explosions on drinks in a commercial package.” The study was conducted in Nevada in parallel with nuclear explosions in the 1950-ies, when the military and scientists tried to create a more complete idea of his new weapon.

A few boxes of beer and soda in the usual commercial package buried at different distances from the epicenter, and then dug up and checked for suitability for use.

“It turned out that the radiation level in the drinks was higher than normal only in parties, placed closest to the epicenter of the explosion (the minimum distance was 300 meters) — it is possible to drink only in case of extreme need. In those batches of drinks that had been left a little further from the Bang — up to 6 miles — the radiation level does not exceed the sanitary norms”, — told Wallerstein the content of the documents in his blog on npr.org.

Previously, “Ridus” reported that that the United States was declassified shooting nuclear weapons tests, and specialists were 750 new entries, and some of them proved to everyone directly on YouTube.

We will remind, the USA became the world’s first nuclear power, having successfully tested a nuclear bomb on 16 July 1945 at the test site in new Mexico. Less than a month later, 6 August 1945, the air forces of the USA were subjected to the atomic bombing of the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and August 9 — in Nagasaki.

In the USSR work on the creation of the atomic bomb was supervised by the head of the NKVD Lavrenty Beria. Entrusted to the Special Committee for the supervision of all works on the use of atomic energy was endowed with extraordinary powers. In connection with the beginning of the cold war and the threat of use of nuclear weapons against the Soviet Union, in a short time created a nuclear reactor, there is industrial production of uranium and plutonium. November 6, 1947 the Minister of foreign Affairs Vyacheslav Molotov publicly announced the opening of the Soviet scientists “secret nuclear weapons”. A successful test of the first Soviet atomic bomb was carried out on 29 August 1949 at the Semipalatinsk test site in Kazakhstan.
