People are capable of anything.
Hollywood loves stories of survival. When Aron Ralston for the sake of his life had to amputate his own jammed boulder in hand, the filmmakers did not miss the chance to make this story exciting movie titled “127 hours” and get him a few coveted statuettes.
However, there are other, no less worthy of the “Oscar” of the story, which Hollywood has not yet arrived:
1. Hell Antarctic Douglas Mawson
In the early 20th century Australian scientist Douglas Mawson organized an expedition to Antarctica.
December 14, 1912, when Mawson and his two colleagues Belgrave, Ninnis and Xavier Meritz, collecting valuable science data returned to the base, disaster struck: Ninnis fell into a crevice and died. Falling, he pulled the sled with supplies and most of the dogs from the sleds travelers. Before the house was 310 miles (almost 500 km)
To get to base, Mawson and Merizo was walking across the barren wilderness of ice, where to hide or rest was absolutely nowhere. Food was a maximum of a third of the way.
When our supplies ended, the traveler had to eat their dogs – this means that to pull the sled now had their own. In the end, Meritz died from cold and exhaustion. Mawson was left alone with the vast Antarctic horror. He suffered from conjunctivitis and a terrible frostbite that was starting to freak skin, wisps of hair falling out, and the soles of his feet oozing with blood and pus. But no matter what, the traveler stubbornly moved forward.
At some point he stepped on the invisible under the layer of snow a crack, fell into a crevice and helpless Kul hung over the abyss, while a sleigh miraculously stuck in the snow on the edge.
Even in this seemingly hopeless situation, Mawson did not give up. He was careful to catch up on the four-meter rope, occasionally stopping and resting until I got to the edge of the cleft. Getting out, he continued on his way and finally made it back to base… where they learned that the ship “Aurora” on which he was supposed to get home, took off only five hours ago!
Next had to wait for 10 months.
2. The story of the marathon runner lost in Sahara
Sand marathon in Sahara is considered one of the most difficult in the world. This six-day crossing with length of 250 kilometres dare only the most experienced and hardy.
Police and pyatiborets from Sicily Mauro Prosperi also decided to test himself. For four days all went well, Mauro was seventh.
And then I came up a sandstorm. According to the rules, in such cases, the participants were supposed to stop and wait for help, but the Italian decided that this perfect storm could not restrain him – he was, of sand seen! Mauro wrapped head scarf and continued on her way.
Six hours later the wind died down, and Prosperi realized that all this time went somewhere. He was so far ahead of the rest, even the flares were useless – no one has seen them. Absolutely alone in the midst of the most extensive and inhospitable deserts on Earth.
Prosperi had nothing to do but keep going. To save fluid, had to write in a flask from under the water. In the end, he came upon an abandoned mosque, where hungry marathon runner was able to profit, catching bats, tearing the poor animal’s head and drinking their blood.
Then out of desperation Prosperi tried to commit suicide by cutting the wrists, but from dehydration his blood thickens so that refused to pour out, so nothing came out – only a couple of scratches and a headache. And then the marathon vowed that he would fight for life until the end, although, apparently, that death didn’t want him to take, so another option is simply not there.
In the next five days, Prosperi continued wandering across the Sahara, to slake the hunger of lizards and Scorpions, and thirsty – dew.
And after nine days of ordeal, fate took pity on him, finally over a pinched Italian, he met a group of nomads, who explained that he is in Algeria, more than 200 kilometers from the place where, in theory, should be.
And what do you think? Two years have passed, and Prosperi signed up for a part in a new marathon, which was back in one piece, unscathed and on time.
3. The story of a man who survived the Australian desert by eating frogs
It was in 2001. Someone Ricky mega woke up… middle of the Australian desert. He was lying face down, covered with earth, and running around with a pack of dogs Dingo, looking at the man with hungry eyes. All this does not promise anything good.
How did he come to be here, Maggie did not understand. The last thing that remained in the memory — he’s driving his own car, driving through sparsely populated countryside to the West. Nothing unusual about that.
Ten days Megi walked barefoot somewhere, and the longer it went, the senseless it seemed to him this way. Finally, he came upon the dam, where they defeated a small hut made of branches and twigs. In this hut, he lived for the next three months, eating leeches and grasshoppers. Sometimes he was able to catch a frog – it was delicious. He dried it in the sun until the frog is covered in a crispy crust, and then with pleasure eating. In the end, Maggie found and rescued the farmers. By this time, he looked like this:

4. The story of a girl who was “adopted” family of monkeys
When Marina Chapman was four years old, she was kidnapped. The last thing she remembered as someone grabbed her from behind, blindfolded and brought somewhere. Woke up the baby in the Colombian jungle. Dad, the girl was not Liam Nisan, so no mountains of corpses of terrorists or wolves with broken jaws, no exciting car chases in this story was not. As there was no quick recovery of the abducted child.
Instead, Marina found the monkey, took her into their clan and began to teach her how to forage for food, climb trees and all sorts of other monkey tricks.
It’s been a few years, and Chapman has achieved outstanding success in the art of stealing rice and fruit from the homes of surrounding villages. Locals, though noticed in the company of apes one suspiciously humanoid, but only threw stones at her, driving away thieves from their homes back to the jungle.
If the fate of abandoned people and animals bred girl seems terrible – not in a hurry. Chapman saved… the human family with a clearly sadistic. These people actually transformed the girl into a slave, highlighting her bed on the floor by the stove.
Fortunately, Chapman was able to escape from their “saviors”. She climbed a tree, where it was noticed by one local woman, called to live and raised as his own daughter. Chapman successfully adapted to life in society, moved to England and met a handsome musician. The case ended with the wedding.
5. The story of a man who for three days stood waist-deep in shit
The world war II veteran Coolidge Winsett from Virginia was 75 years old when he got into this in the literal sense, smelly history.
The home of a lone pensioner was old, with facilities in the yard. Once he went for a piss and rotten floor boards take and fail. Winset been found in a cesspool, waist-deep in shit – in “biblical hell”, as he called it then. To get out independently it not could, because part of his legs were amputated and one hand did not work after a stroke. So he stood three days in a lake of their own feces, fighting off rats, spiders and snakes, which, as it turned out, there were frequent guests.
In the end, the local postman noticed that no one takes the mail, got worried and decided to visit the old man. Passing through the courtyard, he heard faint cries for help and called rescuers.
