Impressive photo project “the Crush in the Tokyo subway”

Michael Wolff a few years off during peak hours in metro in Tokyo, Japan, creating impressive photo Tokyo Compression (“Crush in the Tokyo subway”).

The unnatural posture in which the photographer captured passengers of the Tokyo subway, resemble frozen in the ashes of the inhabitants of Pompeii: uncomfortable bent arms, open mouths, from which breath misted the glass and the tired faces.

Michael began to remove the reality of the subway in the Japanese capital in 2010 and received award World Press Photo for one of his pictures, it came with a photo book in Tokyo publishing house.

“I came to the station and every time the pictures became more and more strained. I usually took pictures of people during rush hour from 7.45 to 8.50 am, when the train arrives every 80 seconds. I only had 30 seconds to take a picture,” – said Wolfe.

As admitted by the photographer on some photos he caught the moment when a passenger rubs hand window glass. At such a moment he always thought that people like asking for help, however, many passengers look surprisingly calm. If they do not suffer, and reached some inner peace.

“During meditation, people often connects the thumb and fingers, so too do passengers on some pictures. You can’t change the situation, so the only thing left to deal with it, hide it somewhere in the depths of your brain, sink into oblivion. You must go through it in the morning and endure the evening on the way back, and nothing can be done, therefore, better – it does not think”, – said the photographer.

The series Tokyo Compression was nominated for the prestigious international award Prix Pictet 2017.
