Western countries could lift sanctions against Russia after the introduction in the Donbass UN peacekeepers with a full mandate.
This was announced by the former Secretary General of NATO, Advisor to the President of Ukraine Anders Fogh Rasmussen.
“If Russia accepts what I said – namely, the provision of the UN peacekeeping mission, a clear mandate, with full control of the Ukrainian-Russian border and cover all areas to protect the population, then Russia may be given a “carrot” in the form of removal of certain sanctions,” he said.
According to him, Russia was forced to announce a proposal for peacekeepers after talking about the possibility of granting Ukraine lethal weapons.
Rasmussen also said that the process of attracting peacekeepers would be rather long.
“Now you’ll have to deal with a very long process in the UN Security Council. Already before the elections, the actual steps will not, by the time you need to put pressure on Russia. Have not discarded any options, including the provision of lethal weapons to Ukraine”, – he concluded.
