According to the study, researchers from the European community of cardiology (European Society of Cardiology) high consumption of salt is associated with double the risk of developing heart failure.

High consumption of salt is one of the main reasons for the development of hypertension and an independent risk factor of coronary heart disease and stroke. Heart failure is one of the major cardiovascular diseases in Europe and worldwide, but the role of high intake of salt in its development not been studied in details. To evaluate this Association, a study was conducted with the participation of 4630 men and women aged 25-64 years. Initial data collection included questionnaires on food habits, body weight, height and blood pressure. The participants also gave blood and urine. 1 g of salt was considered the equivalent of 17.1 mmol excretion of sodium. The study lasted for 12 years. During the follow-up from 121 participants (men and women) were diagnosed with heart failure.

The results of the study showed that participants who consumed more than 13.7 g of salt daily, were observed 2-fold increase in risk of developing heart failure compared with those who consumed less than 6.8 g of salt daily. Moreover, this Association was independent from blood pressure levels of study participants.

According to scientists, the optimum daily intake of salt, probably even below 6.8 g. world health organization (who) recommends to use a maximum of 5 grams of salt per day, and the physiological need for salt is 2-3 grams per day. For a more detailed assessment of the risk of developing heart failure associated with salt consumption, more research is needed in larger associations.
