Metallic glass is an emerging type of material, while working on this material, scientists from Yale University have created a new type of metallic glass.
Usually solid metals have a rigid crystalline structure, but the metallic glass is more like glass than metal as the atoms are arranged randomly. If you make complex alloys and very quickly cool the material, it does not acquire a crystalline structure that leads to the fact that the material is flexible but as strong as steel that makes the material useful in robotics.
Yale University researchers have developed a new version of the material by taking samples of the metallic glass and production of nanorods from it. With a diameter of only 35 nm, those rods are so small that they won’t have room for in the core, and this leads to a new phase state of the material. The researchers called the process of starvation.
It’s hard to say exactly how this new form can be useful, but the researchers say that the process of its creation is a major advantage. Through the creation of metallic glass nanorods of different diameters, the researchers can control how many cores they have and, as a consequence, this opens up a range of new crystalline phases. Testing of the properties of these new materials may lead to unexpected applications.
