Your fear is waiting in the mist: a review of the film “silent hill” (2006)

The adopted daughter of rose named Sharon sleepwalks – girl walks in her sleep and calls out the name of a burnt-out Ghost town, silent hill. Desperate, rose decides to take the girl to the abandoned city in hopes to cure this strange obsession. But the car gets into an accident, Sharon disappears in a thick fog. Now rose must personally go through the village nightmarish monsters of silent hill and learn the terrible secret that hides his story.

Today keyboard called me to tell you about one of my favorite horror films. And born not out of the blue unknown parents, and continue the glorious traditions of the game franchise from Konami. The plot of the film adaptation of Frenchman Christophe Gans treats the source rather freely, but it is confident to create its own Canon. Fortunately, the Hollywood miners managed to move to the big screen the most important thing – unique atmosphere of the foggy abandoned city, which from time to time turns into a branch of hell on Earth.

If you start talking about compliance movie game, you need to touch on the main differences – the protagonist of Silent Hill , Harry Mason, is replaced with the woman, rose Dasilva. Now, to such “tricks” we have become accustomed, but in 2006 the political background was not to blame. The fact that the vision of Hans, the world of silent hill was “quite feminine” – and hinting at the symbolism really is not difficult to see (note to the matriarchy of the cultists, as well as various female characters in the game). In addition, the role rose played great Australian actress Radha Mitchell – but it was accompanied by equally gorgeous Laurie Holden (TV’s “the Walking dead”) in the role of Cybil Bennett (in absentia) winner of “Mr. Screen of Death” with Sean Bean in the role of her husband, Christopher of Dasilva. Perfectly accustomed to the role of young , Jodelle Ferlandwho played Sharon and her “dark” incarnation, Alissa, Deborah Kara Unger in a small but memorable image of Dahlia Gillespie and spectacular Alice Kraydzh, reincarnated in liders sects the Christabella.

Huge deserves respect and representation of the monsters that inhabit the “dark side” of the desert city. Yes, special effects were used, but mostly these roles are performed by professional choreographers, hidden under layers of high-quality makeup. And their design makes perception much more sensitive and powerful than the dull computer models in the trash called “silent hill 2”, released in 2012. Every evil entity, as in the game has its own psychological rationale, the basis for which became the subconscious fears girls, which burned down the city. That implication not only strengthens the logic of the narrative, but sometimes works as a strong catalyst in order to scare the viewer.

The soundtrack in the film is removed not only from the first game of the series – in it are seen the echoes and the second (the theme of the protagonist James Sunderland meet lying in front of a mirror with a knife Angela), and the third (track, under which Heather and Douglas are driving in a car – Letter from the Lost Days – playing in the car, rose). He was responsible for the Japanese composer Akira Yamaokaand his work cannot be called otherwise than a genius. Stunning, disturbing and melancholic melodies, forever sunk into the soul of fans of the game could not be better matched to the scenes in the movie.

“Silent hill” is a great horror film, is meticulously planned and filmed with great respect to the source. More precisely, the main atmosphere of the horror series in the gaming industry to convey, perhaps, impossible – that makes the film Christophe Gans even more attractive, not only for fans of the game, but for a total stranger to her viewers. Before us is perhaps the best adaptation of a video game and one of the best horror films of the last decade. Personally I viewed the film at the moment about seven times, and it is certainly not the limit, because every time it is amazing how first.
