The custom was observed until the 1960-ies, until the government intervened and forbade it. However, the senior women of the tribe are a good example of old beliefs and forced to live with their scars. They also wear huge earrings, which strongly pulled the skin.

The experts have expressed many theories about the origin of tattoos on the face and purpose of their application. One of the most plausible was the fact that women are mutilated intentionally, thus scaring off the kidnappers. This tradition later became an important practice in the culture of the people of chin.
Until the 1960-ies of the girls of the tribe at the age of 12-14 years were subjected to this painful procedure. But thanks to the intervention of the government of Myanmar of the cruel custom has been gradually disappearing.

To date, lost in the mountains village only older women wear tattoos, the younger generation considers them a relic of the past.
