Diverticulitis develops when small protrusions on the inner surface of the colon suffer from an acute infection or inflammation. The symptoms of this disease include bloating and abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, fever, nausea and rectal bleeding. Diverticulitis in the mild form is usually treated with a diet rich in fiber or antibiotics, but more serious cases may require hospitalization and surgical intervention, including perforation of the intestinal wall.
