Who actually did make “Poltergeist” – Hooper or Spielberg?

The secret is out! Decades it was believed that the Poltergeist (Poltergeist, 1982) is a film by Tobe Hooper, which, as a rule and point everywhere in the column “Director”. However, for a very long time rumour (must be not very pleasant for the Hooper), what REALLY directed “Poltergeist” should be considered to be Steven Spielberg, who according to official information was the only producer of this classic tape. And finally, many years later, we have confirmation of these rumors, but still almost “word of mouth”.

Promoting his new horror (“Box” has already released in USA, but in Russia the premiere has been postponed), John R. Leonetti gives, as usual, interviews and recently spoke on the podcast site Blumhouse. It was there that he clarified the issue, “Hooper or Spielberg?” about “Poltergeist”.

It would seem the attitude of Leonetti has to do with this movie? Live!

The fact that John in the past quite experienced cameraman. He filmed “child’s play 3”, “Piranha 3D”, “the Scorpion King” and many movies of James WAN, including “the Spell”. Much he learned with his older brother, and Matthew F. Leonetti, who is now 75 years old, worked as operator on the “butterfly Effect”, a remake of “dawn of the dead” and “Poltergeist”! Moreover, Leonetti Jr. was on the set of this film.

When John asked about that, he replied:

That was really cool in “Poltergeist” – will never forget the first time I walked on the set, and there were many boards hung on them storyboards. And I’ve never seen anything like it. It was a very intense, very fun, very technically highly equipped with the film to work. There’s a lot of what was done. And frankly… Steven Spielberg directed this movie. No doubt about it. Anyway, I love Tobe Hooper. I love this guy. But if I knew that you ask me, it would have taken a photo from the shoot where in one shot you would have seen this whole movie!

Naturally, the journalists went ahead and got this rare photo.

Leonetti, explains:

This is the scene where the tree tries to grab the boy. Worked two cameras. In the foreground (excited) Tobe Hooper. To the right and slightly behind Spielberg – he’s pointing his finger. Next to him is my brother and I near the camera.

Not to mention that this photo really is the main man giving out the instructions, it looks like a young Steven Spielberg, while Hooper seems to be a sort of “funny boy waiting in the wings”. Leonetti talked about what it was like to work with these filmmakers on the set of “Poltergeist”:

It was fun and difficult. Spielberg outside of work was the sweetest guy on the planet. We even went to his house in Beverly hills and watched the news. On the set, he was very active.
Hooper was very nice and he was just happy to be there. He had a creative approach. Stephen developed the film and he was taking it off, but due to the fact that the expected strike of Directors, he was officially listed as a producer, but he actually directed it, but Tobe was there in case will strike – and Tobe was happy with it. This was not something directed against the Touba. From time to time [Spielberg] just walked off the set and gave Touba to remove something, but in fact it was Stephen was the Director.
