Carmakers Volkswagen and Ford have agreed on joint production of pickups and vans in 2022. This was announced on Tuesday by the press service of Volkswagen.
“The Executive Directors of Volkswagen and Ford Herbert Dis and Jim Hackett confirmed that the companies intend to develop commercial vans and midsize pickup trucks in the international market since 2022. The Union will lead to increase scale and efficiency of production, and also will allow both companies to share the investment in the development of vehicles”, – stated in a press release.
In the framework of the agreements, Ford will develop mid-size pick-UPS for both companies, and Volkswagen will create an urban van.
In addition, the company signed a Memorandum on cooperation in the field of unmanned vehicles and electric cars. The details of this agreement will be established over the coming months.
It is noted that the production volume of light trucks in two companies in 2018 amounted to about 1.2 million vehicles worldwide. Both the automaker believe that the demand for such cars will grow over the next five years.
