American scientists will soon complete the monumental building a new machine.
Next year in National lab oak ridge (Tennessee) will be launched on the largest US supercomputer, in 200 thousand times more powerful than the modern laptop and energy-consuming as 12 thousand houses.
A new supercomputer called the Summit would be 10 times more powerful than its predecessor, the Titan Oak Ridge, which will last a year after the launch of the Summit, and then go to the scrap. According to Wired, 5 years — the average “lifespan” of supercomputers.
Summit, like any supercomputer, will be in cabinets and closets. Titan consists of 18688 nodes, each of which has a single CPU (Central processor) and GPU (graphics processor), and the Summit of 4600 nodes, consisting of two CPU and six GPU.
Each of 4600 nodes has the computing power of 40 teraflops, which in itself is not enough. Flops is the number of floating point operations per second. For comparison, six-core personal computer Intel Core i7-4930K (Ivy Bridge) with a frequency of 3.7-4.2 GHz has a capacity of 130-140 gigaflops. Thus, at the peak of the Summit will reach a capacity of 200 petaflops., — millions of billions of operations per second.
