US out of UNESCO

The United States intends to withdraw from the UN agencies on issues of science and culture at the end of 2018.

Thursday, October 12, the U.S. Department of State has notified the head of UNESCO Irina Bokova on the decision to withdraw from this specialized UN Agency for education, science and culture.

In the message of Department it is noted that until 31 December 2018 the US plans to remain a part of UNESCO, and in the future intend to obtain observer status.

The head of UNESCO said he regretted the decision of the US authorities.

In the message of the state Department explained that “a difficult decision” the need for fundamental reforms in the organization and ongoing “anti-Israel bias” in UNESCO and the increase in debt in the organization.

UNESCO — specialized UN Agency responsible for education, science and culture. The organization was created in 1945, its headquarters is located in Paris. The structure of UNESCO is composed of nearly two hundred States.
