The British and French geophysicists discovered at a depth of about 350 kilometers in the Western part of the United States a huge reservoir of dissolved carbon mantle.
The reservoir of carbon is in the upper layer of the mantle. Its surface area is estimated at 1.8 million square kilometers. Approximately over the center of the tank is the Yellowstone Caldera the largest SUPERVOLCANO on the planet.
The reason that this place formed a large reservoir of carbon, is the dip of the Pacific lithospheric plate under the North American. As a result, under the action of water and carbon dioxide contained in the minerals, there was a melting of rocks.
To detect the carbon in the interior of the Earth geophysicists have been using the world’s largest 583 array of seismic sensors. The data obtained by the experts, suggests that the upper mantle contains much more carbon than previously thought — up to 100 trillion tons.
Also, the authors of the study note that anthropogenic emissions of carbon is negligible compared to its reserves in the bowels of the planet. Scientists propose to consider these stocks in the global carbon cycle.
