The pyramid of the moon is one of the largest buildings in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica.
Archaeologists of the National Institute of anthropology and history (Mexico) discovered under the Pyramid of the moon in the ancient city of Teotihuacan underground tunnel, probably in the burial chamber. According to scientists, it symbolizes the afterlife.
It is located in Teotihuacan, which existed from the III century BC to VII century ad. It is believed that there lived the representatives of various indigenous peoples of the Americas, including Nahua, Otomi, and totonac.
The pyramid of the moon was built in 200-450 years BC and was used for ritual ceremonies in honor of the goddess of water and moon, Chalchiutlicue.
During the previous excavations in the 80-ies of the last century, researchers have found human remains with deformed skulls as well as artifacts made from green stone (necklace and anthropomorphic figures). In the new study, experts were scanning the pyramid by using electrical tomography.
They found a tunnel at a depth of eight meters, which leads to a chamber length of 15 meters. The entrance to the tunnel is located in the southern part of the Plaza of the Moon, adjacent to the temple, but it is believed that there is another entrance on the Eastern side.
While archaeologists do not know what is in the burial chamber. However, experts believe that the underground system of the premises symbolized the afterlife and the flow of the sacred waters, Chalchiuhtlicue.
