Ukraine files new lawsuit with the ECHR against Russia

Trained new claim will relate to the Ukrainian political prisoners in the territory of the Russian Federation.

The Ukrainian side next week will give new interstate lawsuit against Russia on political prisoners. This was announced by the Deputy Minister of justice of Ukraine on European integration Sergei Petukhov.

“Next week we are filing an interstate claim against the Russian Federation in respect of all of our political prisoners because it is such a certain category of people who specifically pursues their support for the territorial integrity of Ukraine, for their Pro-Ukrainian position, abducting them in the Crimea or in the territory of the Russian Federation”, – said the Deputy Minister.

He explained that the claim in the European court of human rights (ECHR).

“Often there is absolutely no reason in some of these people to blame. This may be our journalists or activists, who are accused of terrorism or some other nonsense. Accordingly, by filing this lawsuit in the European court of human rights, we will call attention to a category of persons. Because, as a rule, know the names Sentsov, Kolchenko, Sushchenko, maybe a few more, but such people are few dozen. And the attention of the Strasbourg court provide the minimum that they will have humane conditions of detention”, – convinced the Ministry of justice.

The office noted: Russia is afraid of international condemnation, and when there is the attention of international organizations to specific Ukrainians who are in prison, they improve the conditions of detention, allow visits.

“And this in the long term the ability to release them because of the decision of the Strasbourg court… This is the path that we chose in order to draw attention to this category of people and therefore, according to the court, to put pressure on Russia with a demand to release them due to groundless persecution,” – said Petukhov.

He also spoke about the lawsuit already filed by Ukraine in the ECHR.

“The Department of justice first filed a lawsuit in the European court of human rights even before the so-called referendum and annexation of Crimea, which dealt with complex human rights violations in the Crimea, and we expect that at the end of this year or early next year will begin consideration of the case in Strasbourg. Unfortunately, international justice is a bit slower than national”, – said Petukhov.
