This will help prevent problems at the border after Brexit
UK offer Brussels to create a “temporary customs Union” after the country will leave the EU in March 2019.
British Ministers stated that the proposals provide for free trade with the rest of Europe. This will help prevent problems at the border after a Brexit.
During this interim period, the UK also expects to be able to negotiate its own international trade agreements, which it can not do as a member of the customs Union of the EU.
Once this deadline expires, the UK will try to negotiate or “well established” the border with the EU, or a new “partnership” without customs borders at all.
The government has stated that interim arrangements mean that companies will have only one time to adapt to new agreements. This will need to negotiate with the EU, but both sides have not yet begun to discuss trade issues.
Document about the new customs Union is the first of a series of proposals that will be published by the UK government on the key issues of the negotiations with the EU.
Wednesday is expected to set out proposals for the border between Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland.
