The US President Donald trump has officially recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
“I decided it was time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” said trump.
He also ordered the state Department to develop a plan for moving the us Embassy from tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Trump explained that by deferring the recognition of Jerusalem, the US “has not achieved anything in the way of peaceful settlement”. He added that Israel has the right to determine their own capital alone. But the US President stressed that this decision does not mean a departure from his country’s commitment to the peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian problem.
Reacting to the statement of the US President, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called it a historic decision. He added that any peace settlement with the Palestinians should include a paragraph on the status of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had previously warned it might sever ties with Israel if the United States recognizes Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
