The tool can inhibit the development of fatal prion diseases.
The experts used two lasers to measure the speed with which normal prion proteins pass into the condition before they begin to form protein aggregates — amyloid. Scientists have shown that there is a dangerous speed range transition, in which amyloid plaques are formed as quickly as possible. Researchers believe that the protein can be deduced from this range and to reduce the chances of forming aggregates.
The results of experiments with prions isolated from brain of hamsters showed that the transition occurs at a low speed with neutral acidity (pH) of the solution containing the proteins. At low pH (high acidity), however, increases the probability of formation of amyloid. If further accelerate the transition, the prions will not have time to form aggregates.
Scientists also found that anti-Allergy drug astemizole is effective in preventing the growth of plaques, increasing the rate of formation of prions. In addition, experts believe that help in the fight against prion diseases can other antihistamine.
To prion diseases include the Creutzfeldt-Jacob, fatal familial insomnia, and Kuru. They affect the brain and other nervous tissue, are incurable and lead to death in one hundred percent of the cases.
