If you live or work in places where the clean air is useless even to dream, take vitamin C!
The researchers observed over 200 patients with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to establish the influence on their health, the degree of air contamination.
The results showed that with every increase in the number of solid particles per cubic meter (µg/m3) 35 percent increased risk of hospitalization of people suffering from asthma or COPD.
The most vulnerable were people with low levels of vitamin C in the body — the risk of hospitalization they were 1,2 times higher.
“This study adds to a small but growing body of evidence that exposure to air pollution can be modified by antioxidants,” said Michael Brauer, environmental scientist at the University of British Columbia in Canada.
Antioxidants such as vitamin C , can protect the body from harmful molecules called free radicals that damage cells.
Free radicals can be formed including when air pollution enters the lungs, scientists believe that they play an important role in the occurrence of heart disease, cancer, and even respiratory diseases.
Antioxidants can neutralize free radicals before they damage cells.
