The authors of the new project, scientists from the Cancer Center Laura and Isaac Perlmutter found that when using high doses of vitamin C are triggered physiological mechanisms for activation of the enzyme TET2. This is the process they observed during the experiments on mice.
“This restoration of the gene that encodes the enzyme TET2 – by demethylation of DNA. This process does not work properly in patients with the mutation, ” – said the researchers.
Scientists said that, using the “method of vitamin C”, they managed to stop the progression of the disease in animals with blood cancer. Also, according to them, the use of ascorbic acid significantly increases the efficiency of treatment of blood cancer when combined with chemotherapy drugs from the group of PARP inhibitors.
Specialists intend to test the efficiency of intravenous injection of vitamin C in certain types of blood cancer in humans. They noted that they hope to detect other drugs for chemotherapy, which will be equally effective in combination with vitamin C, which turned out to be drugs, proved during the experiment.
