Wine can protect your nerve cells from damage.
Excessive alcohol use causes a wide range of harmful health effects, but some studies have shown that moderate wine consumption can cause positive cognitive effects.
While moderate in the study was considered to be drinking when the person drinks 250 ml of wine a day.
A new study published in the journal “Frontiers in Nutrition”, was dedicated to the investigation of the molecular mechanism underlying this phenomenon.
The researchers, led by Dr. Esteban Fernandez (Esteban Fernández) from the Institute of research of food (Institute of Food Science Research), Spain, decided to study the metabolites of the intestine, which the human body produces after drinking wine. The team selected these metabolites from urine and feces of persons who drink wine regularly and in moderation.
The researchers then added these metabolites to human neurons. The researchers induced stress in these cells to simulate the conditions that usually lead to neuronal death during neurodegenerative diseases.
Research has shown that wine obtained from metabolites prevent the death of neurons under stressful conditions.
According to researchers, the exact composition of metabolites of the wine is crucial for this protective effect. In addition, this composition in turn depends on the composition of the intestinal microbiome, i.e. the trillions of microorganisms living in the gut.
The microbiome of the intestine responsible for processing and splitting the wine to various metabolites, including phenolic acid and aromatic compounds, neuroprotective effects have been demonstrated in this study.
In other words, differences in the microbiome of our intestines lead to the formation of different metabolites, which confirms the idea that people get different benefits from food and beverages, the researchers note.
“I do not advocate replacement drugs diet, but I want to raise people’s awareness about how diet helps to prevent disease or reduce the risk of their development. Almost everyone has the opportunity to go to the supermarket and buy vegetables and fruits: you only need the desire to adhere to a balanced diet. Today’s society is full of false myths about dieting, and the role of science and media is to avoid the spread of these rumors, and to inform people about the importance of diet for your health,” said E. Fernandez.
