Nikolai Amosov

Amos is an incredible surgeon. Just imagine: he spent 6 thousand operations, and through his Institute of cardiovascular medicine held 80 thousand patients! Amos began his practice in unusual conditions – it had to be implemented as a doctor during the war. He was the first man on Earth who dared to do the heart valve replacement. Interesting detail: for the first heart valves Amos used the shreds of his nylon shirt.
He is also the developer of the excellent system of maintaining health. It is based on food restriction and regular moderate exercise. According to him, medicine cures diseases. But to maintain health – everyone’s business. For example, he proved that the system works. After all, postponed the scalpel only 80 years of age!
Vladimir Betz
Years of life: 1834-1894.
Scope: anatomy and histology
Main achievement: description of giant pyramidal neurons of primary motor cortex

Alexander Bogomolets

It was Alexander Bogomolets is the founder of school of pathological physiology, endocrinology and gerontology in Ukraine. He is the organizer of the Ukrainian science. Because petitioner was the founder first in Russia and the Ukraine scientific-research institutions of medical profile.
He also studied the aging process. He is the author of the book “life Extension”, in which he described the concept of the aging mechanism. The book was translated into many languages. His biggest achievement is the study of the interaction of tumor and organism. It was his scientific achievements changed the world of medicine in this area.
He also was a people’s Deputy of the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR. By the way, Olga Bogomolets (the same one that hinders health reform) is a great-granddaughter of academician Bogomolets.
Vladimir Filatov
Years of life: 1875-1956.
Scope: ophthalmology
Main achievement: one of the first in the world to conduct a successful cornea transplant
Vladimir Filatov, the world – famous ophthalmologist, who made a number unheard of at the time of discovery. In 30-ies he was among the first in the world to conduct a successful cornea transplant. He independently designed tools for operations, and for the first time began to contain donor eyes in the ice. He was the last hope for the soldiers.
In Odessa Filatov founded one of Europe’s largest Institute of eye diseases and tissue therapy. Here the doctor was the Director until his death! Filatov is also the author of a new method of treatment – tissue therapy. Her word is widely used in the modern world.
Vladimir Khavkin
Years of life: 1860-1930.
Scope: bacteriology
Main achievement: invented a vaccine against cholera and plague
Vladimir Havkin – bacteriologist of Ukrainian and Jewish origin who worked in France and India. He first studied at the Odessa University. But from there he was expelled for participating in a political organization “people’s will”. And lost incredible the scientist! After all, Khavkin saved the lives of 35 million people. How? He invented a vaccine against cholera and the plague. The diseases that decimated thousands of people and was not salvation nor the rich nor titled.
Most of all his ability to have appreciated the British Empire. He was invited to work in India, where traditionally there are huge problems with the disease. There, Ukrainian is perceived as a deity and called “great white healer”. In the media it became known as the nickname “gooder”.
Nikolay Sklifosovsky
Years of life: 1836-1904.
Scope: surgery
Main achievement: implementation of metal clips in the area of bone fracture; the introduction of antiseptics
Nicholas Copernicus – born in the Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. However, he was educated in Odessa, Moscow and Kharkov. He was the founder of metallochelates, that is, the use of metal clips in the area of bone fracture.
But that’s not all! He came up with some radical ways of operations on the gall bladder, thyroid, stomach and bones.
During operations at the front, he used antiseptics and asepsis, which significantly reduced the mortality rate among the military. At that time both in Europe and in Russia skeptically perceived the use of antiseptics, but under the authority of Copernicus they changed their opinion.
Gregory Minh
Years of life: 1833-1912.
Scope: pathological anatomy
Main achievement: proved that leprosy is not a hereditary disease, but is contagious; that the blood of patients with relapsing fever is contagious; and typhus can carry lice
Gregory Minh was born in Russia. However, the practical knowledge he received in Odessa and Kiev. In Ukraine he became Professor of pathological anatomy.
All his life he was engaged in the study of infectious diseases. That afternoon proved that two different forms of anthrax (pulmonary and intestinal) have a common origin. On himself proved that the blood of patients with relapsing fever is contagious. The authorship of this physician belongs to the doctrine of the contagious nature of leprosy. Prior to that, physicians believed that leprosy hereditary disease.
It is believed that the Minh in 1892 showed that typhus is capable of transferring lice. However, the Nobel prize for this discovery in 1928 gave the Frenchman Charles’s Likeness.
Vladimir Podvysotsky
Years of life: 1857-1913
Scope: bacteriology and pathology
Main achievement: a study of tissue regeneration and indirect cell division
Vladimir Podvysotsky – Ukrainian pathologist, endocrinologist, immunologist, microbiologist, doctor of medicine, Professor. Having a specialty bacteriologist and pathologist, he organized a medical faculty in Odessa University. Also he is the founder of the Kiev school of pathologists.
Podvysotsky discovered the role of adrenal glands in the body. But this is not his main achievement. His name is associated with the study of tissue regeneration and indirect cell division – mitosis. Also, it was the Ukrainian Professor is one of the pioneers of endocrinology research. At the time, led the establishment of the red cross in Kiev. He is honored and remembered throughout the World.
