For the study, the team used the data about potassium and cardiovascular diseases 11 studies, covering a total of 247510 men and women.

They found that people who consumed 1.64 grams of potassium or more a day have a 21 percent lower risk of stroke and also tend to have a lower risk of any cardiovascular diseases.

Italian researchers said that potassium slows the development of atherosclerosis and preventing the thickening of arterial walls that often leads to cardiovascular disease.

Other experts noted that a diet high in potassium and low in sodium can significantly lower blood pressure.
