1. Penicillin
In 1928, a doctor of Scottish origin Alexander Fleming, exploring in the laboratory the flu virus, I noticed that one of the samples of bacterial cultures was contaminated with fungus. Most scientists would have simply thrown away the damaged material, but Flemming acted differently. Upon closer inspection he noticed a clean ring around the fungus, indicating its toxic effect against staphylococci in the Petri dish. Fleming isolated the mold Penicillium and named the medicine made of it, “penicillin”. He was subsequently honored for his discovery of the Nobel prize.

Learning to work in a steel mill from the age of 12, Harry Brearley in his 30 years was a real expert and a leading researcher in the field of industrial chemistry. In 1912 he developed the composition of the steel alloy mixture of iron and other metals that can withstand the superheated friction within the rifle barrel. Experimenting, Brearley noticed that one of the alloys was still shiny and bright, while the rest were rusted. After analyzing its composition, he found the exact formula stainless steel.

Brearley was trying to convince his superiors to establish the production of Cutlery with the use of a new alloy, but the offer was rejected as potentially unprofitable. Ultimately, however, the inventor was recognized as the Creator of one of the most important metal of the 20th century.

It is caused by tiny hooks instantly secure the seeds of the plant to the wool surface. Being by profession an electrical engineer, not a designer, de Sometimes however spent the next eight years in the research and development of clothing fasteners, based on its accidental opening. The first prototype was made of cotton, then nylon. 7. X-rays
In 1895, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, a little-known German physicist, investigated the cathode rays. In those days nobody knew anything about electrons or radiation. X-rays allowed through the vacuum tube current with high voltage and was surprised to find that although he closed tube sheets of black cardboard, some invisible rays were still able through them to affect sensitive screen, located a few metres away.

Soon Roentgen discovered that the unusual rays can also be captured on photographic plates. Using to sample his wife’s hand (what a gentleman!), he has received the picture of her bones: the rays easily passed through skin and muscle, but were blocked by bone tissue and metal. For the first time people were able to look inside the human body, not picking up the scalpel.

Roentgen received the First Nobel prize in physics in 1901.

8. Beer
No one knows exactly who invented the first beer. People first began to explore the processing of grain about 10,000 years ago in Mesopotamia. Initially bakery products were fresh, flat and hard. But sometimes the grain was wet, becoming food for the natural yeasts, producing alcohol as a by-product. At some point the ancient bakers had to notice that it was fermented in a similar way, grains are the Foundation of lush loaves of bread. Some enterprising (and slightly crazy) people probably also decided to take a SIP of the strange foam formed in the fermentation process… And discovered beer!

Some anthropologists and archaeologists even speculate that beer, not bread, was the original cause of agriculture. Bread, according to some, was just a convenient by-product obtained in an effort to make the beer tastier
