The U.S. Department of state said that he found clear signs of Russia’s influence in social media on the riots in Chile. This is stated on the Agency’s website.
“We can see clear signs that people use disputes [in social networks] and distort them <…> instead, to allow Chilean citizens to independently discuss what the course has to take over their country. They seek to exacerbate differences, to foment the conflict and do everything to ruin the democratic dispute,” he said during a press briefing by a senior representative of the Department, not mentioned by name.
According to him, the state Department recorded the actions of these people signs of activity.
The unrest began in Chile in mid-October. The reason for this was caused by the growth of prices for travel on the subway from 800 to 830 pesos (71,8 74,5 and the ruble, respectively), but now the protesters are demanding the resignation of the President and social reform: raising pensions and salaries, improving the quality of education and reduction of drug prices.
These days the number of protesters in the Chilean cities has grown to a million people. The clashes of protesters and police killed 19 people and hundreds were injured.
