In new York at the meeting of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly adopted an updated draft resolution on human rights in the occupied Crimea.
In a vote, the document was supported by representatives of 71 countries, 25 were against and 77 countries decided to abstain. Opposed by Belarus, North Korea, Venezuela and several other countries.
Deputy Minister of foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya, which is part of the Ukrainian delegation in new York said that Russia continues to clear violations of its obligations as a state that occupies the Crimea. Crimeans live in fear of being called extremists, terrorists or Ukrainian spies, which means they’re a criminal prosecution.
However, the Russian representative called the document “detached from reality” and another attempt of Ukraine to change the status of Crimea “contrary to the decision of the people in the referendum in the Crimea.”
In the composition of the Ukrainian delegation to the meeting of the UN General Assembly attended by members of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, including the people’s Deputy of Ukraine Mustafa Dzhemilev, the Ukrainian diplomats and human rights activists.
The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko on his Twitter page welcomed the decision of the United Nations.
“I welcome the decision of the Third Committee regarding enhanced resolution of the UNGA about the human rights situation in Crimea. Grateful to the sponsors of the decision and all of our allies for a strong signal to the Russian occupying authorities on the international unity and solidarity in the issue of de-occupation of the Crimea”, – said Poroshenko.
He also expressed hope that the UN General Assembly in December, will support the resolution.
