And now a little exotic. Far away on the border of Spain and France (actually, not so far), is a small so-called autonomy of the Basque Country – a region inhabited by the indigenous Basque people, whose language does not belong to the Indo-European family, and the traditions and mythology are somewhat different from the traditions and mythology of the other zones of Spain and France. So, as it became recently known that a Spanish company by filmax International (their record is the “Report”) has acquired the rights to the debut film directed by Paul Urkijo Alijo (don’t know how this name would sound in Russian), native of the Basque Country.
The picture was taken in the Basque language, called “Errementari – The Blacksmith and the Devil”. Dictionaries suggest that errementari is “blacksmith” in Basque, so meet – “Blacksmith: the Blacksmith and the devil”. Or, if not to sneer, it was simply “the Smith and the devil”, because we have the original Basque term, and its detailed interpretation for ordinary viewers. It is known that this dark fantasy is based on a Basque folk tale ”Patxi errementaria” (Smith Patxi), written by the priest, archaeologist and anthropologist josé Miguel de Barandiaran in 1903, the year. Its action takes place in 1845, the year, and in the center of the story some devilish creatures, fighting for slave soul.
Until that information on the movie a bit: it needs to be submitted at the current Cannes film festival, and its Director has described his work this way:
“This Gothic horror with a demonic story filled with adventure and dark humor. I want to immerse the audience into the world of amazing images of Basque folklore and love itself”.
Sounds good. The screenshots hint at the suitable sets and costumes, so it makes sense to follow the events and don’t miss the trailer. Well, the vintage poster you can see right now.
