“The Shining” Stanley Kubrick could have several different endings

“The shining” (The Shining) Stanley Kubrick – a classic of the genre and one of the worst films of all time. Though not all of this adaptation of the novel of Stephen king are valued. Including, as you know, she does not like myself and the king. The reason, in General, one Director pretty much walked away from the source material.

Kubrick ignored one of the important, Central in the novel plot lines, removed some scenes, changed the ending. Much closer to the original source was mini-series 1997 model year. But now, after all it will be about the film.

In the book the ending was different than in the movie. The the overlook hotel burnt to the ground along with Jack TORRANCE, who, possessed by the ghosts of the Overlook, inside. Jack’s wife, Wendy, their son Danny and the hotel’s cook, dick Halloran escaped. I think TORRANCE killed dick, and at the end was freezing in the snow. And no fire in the hotel was not.

But as it turns out, Kubrick didn’t always think this final fact that was necessary for his movie. This was stated by the writer Diane Johnson, who helped Kubrick to write the script, and producer of the Shining , Jan Harlan. Johnson, now 82 years old, and currently 79 years old, so both it makes no sense to talk of something for the sake of PR, but to remember the past – the time.

So, if you believe Johnson and Harlan, there were several ideas for alternative endings to “the Shining”. They were included in different versions of the script. According to one such version, in the finale of Wendy killing Jack. In another embodiment, Jack was able to kill his own son.

The finale of the novel, king the Director felt clichéd. Imagine a big BA-da-bum in the final by 1980 was considered a fucking cliché, but we still repeatedly see this movie!

But we digress. So, the final book Kubrick didn’t like. He thought he can find something else more interesting in a visual sense and as a metaphor.

In the book no one but Jack did not die. And Kubrick believed that it was necessary to kill someone, because after all, he was going to shoot a horror movie. So he, along with Johnson had considered various options, the dramatic possibilities that would bring the film death of a character. Detail, and earnestly discussed the probable death of almost ALL the characters in the film.

Kubrick was most interested in the relationship between Jack and his son, Danny. Emotionally he was close the point of view of a little boy who is afraid of his father. Once Kubrick has said that he imagines the following picture: the outline of a small body outlined with chalk on the floor, as do the police when note the location of the corpse at the crime scene. Kubrick liked this picture. But still he was too good a person to do such a finale. He believed that it will be too scary.

The idea was to leave dick Halloran alive. But Kubrick thought that the evil force of the hotel has possessed would cook, turning in a “substitute Jack”. According to this idea, Halloran came to the overlook to help Danny, but the hotel possessed him, and it was getting big and dark surprise in the final. In fact, this version of the script even survived. And we have it in PDF format.

And here is the famous final shot of the film, where we see the old collective photo of employees of the overlook hotel – and among them, Jack TORRANCE, is ALWAYS included in the plans Kubrick. In the book the hotel was surrounded by a “hedge” in the form of various animals, and in one of the chapters she really came to life and was chasing Danny. But the Director thought it might look pretty silly and “not real” on the screen. But Kubrick liked the image of the labyrinth. He didn’t want plenty of blood and special effects, Kubrick wanted more psychology, so even the bloody scenes in his film have a certain symbolism.

The producer recalls:

Often members of the film crew asked [Kubrick]: “could you explain this?”. What Kubrick replied: “I never explain, I don’t understand all of this. This movie is a Ghost!

And really, do many things intuitively by visualizing on film the images that were in his head, in the mind. For example, in the scenes inside the hotel you can see a huge tall Windows, but nothing of the sort is visible in any scene showing the overlook from the outside.

“The shining” Kubrick is credited with many meanings and ideas, but there was no trace. One of the craziest fan theory says that Kubrick was laid in his tape message of… the Holocaust! Producer and co-writer refute this theory, like many others.

They also talked about some scenes that were cut from the film. The reason for the edits that have removed the cockpit, it was a very long movie. And the Studio insisted on shortening it. So that was cut a few not so important scenes.

In particular, after Jack’s death and before the final frame with a photo on the wall of the Overlook, there was a scene in the hospital where the hotel Manager Ullman visited Wendy and Danny. Ulman told them that at the Overlook did not find any evidence of paranormal activity, which Wendy and Danny told me. And gave Danny a ball for tennis. And it was the same ball that was rolled to Danny from the mysterious room 237. No special meaning this scene does not contain, and was just a little plot twist, giving the audience a hint that after all the mysticism in “the Overlook” took place… and that Ullman’s part of it.

There were other scenes of this kind. Unfortunately, they were all destroyed, was, as urged by Kubrick, who did not want to someday somehow could create a version of this film is different from the one that he created himself.
