Scientists from Japan announced plans to drill all of the earth’s crust and reach the mantle of our planet.
It is assumed that the drilling process will be conducted in the ocean, but the exact location has not yet been selected.
The implementation of a project entitled “discovery of Land” is the Japanese Agency of science and technology for marine mineral resources (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, JAMSTEC). Drilling will be carried out in the ocean with exploration vessel Chikyu, equipped with a drill column with a length of 10,000 meters.
Taken at 10-km depth of the sample will allow to learn more about the history of the Earth, the movement of ancient continents and the properties of the lower boundary of the crust. In addition, new knowledge can be applied in predicting earthquakes and exploration of mineral deposits.
Currently, a record-deep is the 12 km Kola superdeep borehole, founded in 1970 in the Murmansk region. On the ocean floor crust is much thinner, and, according to estimates of Japanese scientists, drill, descending from the ship, first overcome four kilometers from the surface to the bottom of the ocean, and then delve into the earth’s crust for six miles.
Recently, experts have begun to the final selection of the most promising areas for drilling. The short list included three points in the Pacific: in the waters of Costa Rica, Mexico and Hawaii.
